Boroughmuir 31 Vikings 15 Match Report John Leatham
Try scores for vikings (Henry leatham. Silas sneddon. Seb caffrey.
The Vikings squad assembled on a clear autumn morning at Boroughmuir, excited for their first match of the season. At boroughmuirs request the game was played in three 15 minute blocks.
The boys have shown first class effort in early training sessions and were eager to test their mettle in a live game.
The early portion of the game, the Vikings were a bit tentative and slow out of the blocks against a game and organised Boroughmuir who had a few dangerous runners in space. Some errors and indecision saw the Vikings ship 2 tries and served as the wake up call they needed.
Some hard direct running from the forwards, coupled with some aggressive ruck clearing, saw the Vikings methodically march down the pitch as they started to win the arm wrestle. A sharp pick and go from Henry Leatham saw the vikings reduce the arrears and our line speed in defence was starting to force errors from the hosts.
The end of the first third came with the vikings in the ascendancy but unfortunately didn't transfer this to the second third. Boroughmuir spent a large portion of it in the vikings 22 but herculean defensive efforts kept them out until the very last play of the third when the pressure finally told and the vikings were back to a two score deficit.
The start of the final third saw the Vikings return to what had worked early on, with some rampaging forward carries testing Boroughmuir's defence to its limit. Silas sneddon got the score with a typical hard carrying run.
Credit to Boroughmuir who upped their game again after this setback. The weary Vikings started to drop off their line speed and the tackling got a little ragged as fatigue set in. Boroughmuir managed to put the game to the bed with a couple of long range tries but the vikings were determined to have the last word. After some good forward carries provided some go forward ball, sharp passing in the backs saw seb caffrey neatly step an overstretched defender and score a consolation for the Vikings.
Overall, a super effort from the boys and many positives to build on. We look forward to a return fixture later in the season, and a chance to even the scorecard.
Offensive player of the game: Silas Sneddon
Defensive player of the game: Andrew Edgar.
