Vikings lined up against a strong and deep Accies squad on a blustery autumn morning. As agreed prior, the game was split into 3, 15 minute thirds.
The scoreline betrayed how competitive this game was for large periods. Accies had a few very dangerous runners in space but the Vikings made them work hard for any tries when they had possession, racking up a number of impressive cover tackles. Particularly noticeable was Silas Sneddon who won defensive player of the game. The scoreline was pumped up by Accies ruthlessly taking advantage of errors in our possession and quickly scoring tries in the transition.
The Vikings looked at their best when putting together a string of strong forward carries, noticeably Bertie Beckett in his debut, who won offensive player of the game.
The gainline was being consistently won but momentum was stalled somewhat by the ruck being slowed down by Accies. Aa source of frustration on the sideline, but something we will need to work on in training to make a non -actor in future fixtures.
What was very admirable and commendable from the boys was that they stuck to their task all game, did not allow the scoreboard to check their work ethic or enthusiasm, and that augurs well for the future. The defensive work we have put in at training has shown up and if we can add some attacking chemistry the scoreboard will be different in the future. Strange to say after a multiple score defeat but we aren't too far away from winning matches.
We roll our sleeves up for another crack at Boroughmuir, on Sunday 9th Novmwhere we are confident if we can bring our best version of ourselves we can get that first win of the season.
Onwards and upwards.
